End of Year Checklist

The end of the school year can be a time to reflect on the year and your child's progress, but also a time to make sure that everything is in place for the Fall. Here is a quick checklist for you to consider:

  • Review your child's progress as compared with the individual goals on their IEP as well as the district standards for learning. If you're unsure how to assess this, reach out to the school team for clarification. If you're unhappy with your child's progress, request a meeting to discuss added support that may be necessary and/or available.

  • Review your child's possible need for Summer services. Has your child shown regression during breaks from school? Is this an item that is already in place on their IEP or do you need to request a meeting with the school team to discuss? Make sure you have information regarding these services prior to the end of school so that you can plan your Summer schedule around any proposed services.

  • Are you familiar with the school's placement policy regarding classroom teachers and their transition process? If not, you can consider reaching out to the school team for more information as well as talking to other parents. The special education parent group or school parent group can be a good resource. It is important that all information about your child's needs are considered and information is exchanged between the teaching teams.

  • Make sure that you have completed your annual meeting and signed any paperwork so that services will be in place. If you have questions about any part of the paperwork or process, reach out to the school team for clarification and/or schedule a meeting if you have questions.

  • If your child is transitioning to a new school, reach out to the school team to ensure all information and paperwork is in place. Consider reaching out to the administration or special education team leader or liaison in place at their new school.

  • If you need assistance, consider consulting with an advocate to support you through the process of ensuring your child will have everything in place prior to the the end of the current school year while school personnel are still available to assist you.

  • I am attaching regulations regarding placement under the Resources button. I hope your child enjoyed a positive learning experience this year and wish you a peaceful and relaxing Summer! I am available for a free consultation as always if you have questions or are in need of support.
